Happy New Year!  2010 was tumultuous and great and 2011 is going to be even better!

二〇一一年、あけましておめでとうございます!
昨年は今までとは違った大きな出来事がいくつもあり、感動あり勉強ありでOvertureでの活動が次の段階に突入した激動の1年でした。すごかった!今年もなんだか壮大な面白いことが起こりそうな気がします。
Overtureに関わってくださった全ての方にありがとうを!今年も応援よろしくお願いします。そして皆さんに底力が爆発するような素晴らしい1年が起こりますように。

little Bryum & Kapok

We really had to share this:  our sister Sara made us Bryum & Kapok  dolls for Christmas this year!  They are amazing and will really be keeping our spirits up during the darkest winter nights.

この写真達…ごらんくださいませ皆様〜!
今年のクリスマスにジェイソンのお姉さんのSaraが私達にひとつずつプレゼントしてくれたBryumとKapokのお人形です!もちろん手編み、世界にたった一組の編みぐるみです。
この二人を作るために何度も何度もビデオを見て研究してくれたそうです…(涙)
細かい所までよーく出来てて、本当にかわいくて毎日ニヤニヤしながら眺めています。










Sara is also responsible for the Ding Dong Yeah dolls we have had for some years now and are in our fifth year anniversary photos.  She also made the Overture flag that you may have seen hanging on the wall of our studio in the first Nook Notes video, which we originally designed and used for our wedding ceremony in 2007.

Saraは以前、Ding Dong Yeahsの人形も作ってくれました…これはOverture5周年記念の写真に一緒に映っています。これも大変に可愛かったです。
そうそう他にも作ってくれています。
製作日誌Nook Notesのビデオのスタジオのシーンに映っている大きな旗(今年の夏の日本旅にも持っていったので見た事ある方もいるかも)も2007年に私達が結婚パーティーのためにデザインし、彼女が製作してくれました。多彩なSaraが次に何を作って驚かせてくれるのか楽しみです!



Nook Notes: Entry 04

Here is the second of our Nook Notes video entries, a trip to Barton's Cove, the small peninsula in the Connecticut River just across the water from where we currently live and the original location for the inspiration for the animation we are working on.
It is a quiet bit of woodland and along with recent video of the area we've mixed in some photos from the camping trip that conceived the characters and story of this animation.

The music is another sketch by Rec.tangle.  It is taken from the set the last short song was a part of.

制作中の映像の様子や背景をお伝えするNookNotes、今回はひとつ前のNook Notes Video(http://overture-image.blogspot.com/2010/12/nook-notes-entry-03.html)にも少し出てきていたエリアBarton's Cove(バートンズコーブ)の風景です。
バートンズコーブはコネチカット川に突き出た小さな半島で、私達の家から見える川を挟んで向こう側にあります。
この場所で夏にキャンプをした時に、Rec.tangleの音楽を持って行き、川の流れる様子や次第に暗くなっていく中で向こう岸の明かりを眺めたりしているうちに、現在作っているアニメーションのアイデアが浮かんできたのです。
ビデオでは、バートンズコーブを訪れて撮った最近の映像の中に、夏のそのキャンプで撮った写真も混ぜています。

音楽は今回もRec.tangleのものです。
Overtureの未来の作品のために制作してくれた短い曲の一部を使わせてもらいました。



Nook Notes: Barton's Cove



年末は本当に慌ただしいですが、制作も着々と進んでいます。
とは言え、年の瀬の行事なども入ってくるので年が明けるまではイレギュラーな感じでがんばります。
皆様も空気の乾燥する時期、運動や足湯などで汗かいて体をウイルスから守ってくださいね。


Istanbul Animation Festival!

This is happening right now and for some reason we didn't even know it!
But!  If you are around Istanbul this weekend check out the Instanbul Animation Festival taking place at the Pera Museum from the 16th to the 19th.
Bryum & Kapok was selected for this festival and is screening on the 19th at 1:30 PM.

We are very grateful to be a part of the festival, especially now when various threads of our life are connected to this ancient city.

IAF6. | Istanbul Animation Festival

フェスティバル開催期間は12/16 から19まで。(もうスタートしています)
イスタンブールのペラ美術館内のシアターで、選ばれた作品が上映される予定です。
B&Kが上映されるのは最終日の19日、コンペティションフィルムズ・12というプログラムです。
これを知ったのはついさっき、それも偶然このフェスティバルの上映スケジュールのページにいって知りました…(笑)発表は11月にはもうされてたみたいなんですが…見落としたんですね、きっと。
お近くの方はぜひ!私達も、ひとり友達がイスタンブールにいるのでこのニュースを教えるのが楽しみです。ペラ美術館は下の写真のような所です。素敵な会場!
最近なんだか周辺がトルコづいてるような気が…呼ばれてるのかもしれません。トルコ、喜んで。

Nook Notes: Entry 03

Here is a short video of us and some birds!
It is also a short video describing our current workspace and the surrounding area.  The river and the dam play a large role where we are now, we see it when we wake up in the morning and hear the deep roar of the falling water when we go to bed.
At the beginning of the video when the title appears the shot is of our spot of inspiration, Barton's Cove, which is very close to us, and even visible from our studio now that the leaves have fallen off the trees.

The music, by the way, is by Rec.tangle.  It is a little sketch he did for us in preparation for a feature-length animation we are slowly planning.

新作ビデオの情報をお伝えするNook Notes。
3回目は私達の現在の作業場の様子や今住んでるあたり(そして鳥、鳥、鳥達)を短い映像で紹介します。

川とダムを見下ろす現在のスタジオ・アパートメントは、朝起きると寝室の窓から眺める事が出来、夜寝るときは大量の川の水がダムに流れ込む心地よい音が遠くに聞こえます。

ちょうどタイトルが出ている所で今回のビデオのアイデアが生まれたBarton's Coveというキャンプ場のある半島が映っています。

音楽はRec.tangle。
現在ひっそりと進行中の長編作品のために、彼が作ってくれた短い印象的な曲達の中から一曲使わせてもらいました。
冬の始まりに撮った映像なので全体的にグレーで少し寒々しく見える所を(もうちょっと早く撮れば良かったですね…)、彼の音楽で暖かさを感じてもらえたらと思います。
では暖かい飲み物などと一緒に、どうぞ。

Kichimu Memories

Kichimu, where we held our last MoonHare exhibition and Storytellers event during our summer adventures in Japan is really an amazing space.  A number of different businesses, a gallery, a restaurant, a massage parlor, a cafe and even more upstairs, all share a small but comfortable space set back from the main bustle of Kichijoji.
Recently they updated their website and included photos of our time there.  These photos were taken by Nana, photographer and co-owner of Kichimu, with her sister, Ikuko Harada.

個展「MoonHare」と、トオヤマタケオさんとの「Storytellers」でお世話になった東京・吉祥寺の複合スペース”キチム”のホームページ(http://www.kichimu.la/)が少し変化して、今までのイベントの写真がアップされたフォトページができてました。

We'll certainly be going to the New York screening in February!

Nook Notes: Entry 02

It has been a wet week, here above the Great Falls, and though we've felt a little beaten down by the weather the drawing continues!  Many animals come visiting the river when the clouds are as low as they've been and we've seen swans and red-tailed hawks and rabbits among the regular customers of geese, mallards and woodpeckers.

雪になりきれない雨がしとしと降っています。夜はマイナスになるけど昼間は15℃になったりする日もある11月にしては暖かい気候。
ニンジン、パースニップ(白いニンジンみたい)、カボチャに大根…根菜をたっぷり使った食事を取って来たるべき冬に備えます。
さて、前回のNook Notesで紹介したグンナルに引き続き、今回はもう一人の主役、オヤミちゃんの紹介です!






































Anyway, this is Oyami!  She is a mystery!  She is connected to the forest where Gunnar lives, but she is also connected to the dark and shadows - but to fireflies as well!
She is also a wild, unknown thing and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Oyami is the other main player in the animation we are working on.  Like last time, this is still just a rough sketch of her.
We will be back again soon with more details on this project!

オヤミちゃんは、グンナルの住んでいる森にいる謎の生き物です。
彼女が森に出てくるのはいつも太陽が落ちてから。暗闇と影が大好きで、蛍とは何か特別のつながりがありそうです。
森で見かけた事はあっても、オヤミちゃんの家がどこにあるのか、昼間はどこで何をしているのか、誰も知りません。
彼女が新作ビデオの主人公の一人として、グンナルとともに出てきます。どうぞよろしく!

インタヴュアーは、ベルリン在住のイタリア人、Ludag名義で活動するBruno Colajannです。

1.Hello Aya and Jason! Where are you right now?


     Right now we're living in Western Massachusetts in the U.S.  Lot's of old hills and forests!




2. In the August 2004 you founded your project, Overture.  What do you remember of that  summer day? Where did you meet for the first time?

   Yes, we remember that day very well!  It wasn't the first time we met, we had known each other through mutual friends for a few years at that time, but it was the first time we ever really talked.  We went on a camping trip with a group of friends to Okutama, a beautiful mountainous area with deep, narrow ravines, not far from Tokyo.  After dinner we found ourselves together and began talking about our interests and found our ideas and thoughts to be amazingly aligned.  Everyone was gathering in a cabin but we went to an empty one and began drawing together.  Talking and drawing we stayed up all night and knew that we had to continue together, something had been sparked. 


3. Do you share a desk or do each of you have your own desk? Can you describe it?

     Our main workspace at the moment is a long counter made of plywood and sawhorses where we have our computers and lightboards lined up.  We recently moved to a cozy second floor studio/apartment overlooking a river and dam, just a kilometer from the camping spot where we thought up the animation we are currently working on.  The river carries the inspiration to us!  We have high ceilings and many books in our apartment, most of them belonging to the owner of the house.  Plus we have a small room for painting and other messy activities.  We used to work facing each other but this new setup seems to be working well!



4. Overture is an "Opera House" where you both sometimes let other people take part in your projects as well. Can you describe how a day goes by for Overture? 
     
We may be picking up help in the near future but for the most part it is just the two of us working on projects!  Even when we are working on something like an animation, the musicians involved usually don't live anywhere near us and we typically only communicate through email.  In fact most of our work is like that, we really don't do much locally where we live so everything is through the internet - at least during the creation process.  We were fortunate to tour Japan this Summer, doing small performances and holding a number of exhibitions and during this time we were able to actually interact with other artists and musicians in person and that was really great and a pretty fresh experience for us!

5. Can you tell me about your studies and experiences in your countries? (I guess Aya comes from Japan). When did you decide to become artists?
A: Yes, I am from Japan!  I didn't go to art school but I was an artist's assistant for a while.  I've just always drawn, since I was a child.
I think I decided to become an artist when I was with a real artist, working as an assistant or participating in a project.
J: I also didn't go to art school but have always just been making things.  I did puppet shows when I was little and wrote stories.  I don't think I've ever had a moment where I thought I wanted to be an artist, just a never ending drive to create.



6. In another world what would Jason Malcom and Aya eventually  be?

A: I think I would be an animal that could do little detailed things, like a raccoon or squirrel.
J: a taveler on the Silk Road.


7. It seems music plays an important role on Your creation. Does Aya or Jason play music too?

A: We both play a bit of music, though less recently than a year or so ago.  
J: I grew up playing a few instruments and singing in school through highschool.  When I came to Japan I played in a number of bands and when we moved to the U.S. the two of us would meet with local friends and play music almost once a week.  Especially when we are working on an animation, music is an excellent exploration tool and can be a freeing, spiritual release.

8.You did wonderful videos for indie musicians such Haushka, KiraKira and Mùm.  Are there other artists you would like to work for too?

    Yes, there are many artists we would like to work with!  We are constantly looking to expand what kind of music we work with, looking to possibly do more rhythmically oriented pieces or possibly some kind of noise-related animation - although it really depends on what we come upon and who we meet and what the moment holds.
We are also interested in doing more performance based animation and would love to work with people like Cirque du Soleil or Royal de Luxe.
We would also like to work with live film directors for creating short pieces in films or possibly opening/closing animations.  Although we are also looking to create our own feature length films in the future - animation and possibly live action as well.


9. First time I saw your creations I found your style unique and in the same time very related to Japan and North Europe imaginary. Maybe because when I was a child I used to watch cartoons as "Tanoshii Moomin Ikka"  (from the lovely swedish comics series Moomin by Tove Jansson) or "Tongari Boushi no Memoru", both of them with the character design by Yasuhiro Nakura for Key Animation. Can You tell us in which way the the place where you have lived influenced your imaginary?



A: I'm not sure how much influence it had on my style, but I was born in Beppu, a city famous for its onsen (hot springs) and this certainly has been a big influence on my creations.  I read a lot of books, both Japanese and foreign, as a child and over time this has become nutrition for my style.
J: I grew up in the area we live in now, spending a lot of time in the winding woods around my house and also sometimes visiting the labyrinthine hydroelectric stations my father worked at.  I spent a lot of time playing by myself.

10. What about your favorite artists?

There are so many great artists who we love and who have influenced our work!  We typically find ourselves drawn more to artist writers and folks with stories and ideas than visual artists, but here is a mix of some of our favorites:
Jan Svankmejer, Susan Pitt, Rene Laloux, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Tezuka Osamu, Michael Ende, Tove Jansson

11. If you could do a remake of a movie, fairytale, book, which ones would You choose?

Hmmm...we would definitely like to do an animated version of Michael Ende's Momo... we would also like to do some simpler fairytale stories, like the Billy Goats Gruff, and possibly something a bit more heavy and recent, like Nakagami Kenji's, The Immortal.


12. On "Bless", the video for the icelandic musician "Kirakira", there are  a lot elements about religion, nature, fate and destiny. On the end you can see the Parcae (the Fates), that in Greek mythology were Cloto (the Youth), Làchesi (the Fertility) and Atropo (the  Oldness), that can decide when it's time for you to die. Each time I see your animations I feel a deep feeling about nature, religion and mystery as something we should not be scared of. Can animation be a sort of antidote against sadness? 

Certainly!  Although, we don't necessarily intend anything in the creation of the animation.  We do think up the stories and characters and guide the narrative, but we also try to let ideas and themes arise from our unconscious - this was especially true in Bless.  Our animation reflects in many ways our lives at the time of creation, our thoughts, outlooks, activities.



13. What made you scared when you were a child? To be alone in the dark? What was your antidote?
A: I was frightened by the expanse of universe and time, especially the idea of existing in the vast space after death.  I didn't have an antidote, although these feelings have dulled as I've gotten older.
J: I was afraid of the void and dangerous potential in the shadows.  I have had night terrors (sleep paralysis/ kanashibari) since I was little and often thought I was being attacked or punished with electricity by monsters or the Christian God.  I had a theory that whenever I thought of nice things before I fell asleep I would have bad dreams so I would force myself to consider scary thoughts in the dark of my room to hopefully have a reverse effect.

14. The style of Overture is special also because that beautiful watercolor texture You use. It's hand made or do You use special software for that?

All the watercolor technique you see in the videos are done by hand.  Figuring out how to do that on a computer is a bit over our heads.



15. How long does it take to realize a video such as " Rhubarbidoo"?

Rhubarbidoo was our first kind of music video and we were still figuring out a process.  I think we spent the early part of the Summer '07 on it.  Generally though we plan animations to go one month for one minute.  This changes depending on the type of animation, the amount of time we have to devote to the animation, and other factors.



16. What's the hardest side of your job? 

Well, we only work on projects we feel match our own goals and this usually means there isn't much money involved.  Having to live off very little or having to work for some kind of supplementary income is extremely taxing and drains a lot of energy we could be focusing on our work.  In a similar sense marketing our work is also a side that is very trying for us.
And then balancing a normal life, eating, exercising, spending time with friends, etc. while also spending every free moment on a project is nearly impossible and really wears on our minds and emotions.
Making things, while some aspects are monotonous or difficult to get into, etc. is really a joy compared to these other elements.  And while we sometimes butt heads over certain details, working together is one of the driving factors of our artwork and we love this as well.



17. What about your next projects? Will it be possible in the future to see your video and drawings all together on a book?

We have a number of projects we are currently working on and also planning on for the future!  We are currently working on a new short animation, the reason for our current location (for research and inspiration), which we are hoping to wrap up by the Spring. 
We are also putting together a dance/music/animation performance with KiraKira, while starting work on some book ideas using the water and ink technique we have been honing for the past while.
And then there is a feature length animation we have slowly been planning over the past few years and are currently hunting for funding while fine tuning its proposal package.
We are always looking to work on new animation projects and also want to get more involved in books.  We will have a small artbook/zine released from a record label in Japan and we will see where that goes - but we would love to also put together a book collecting stills from our animations and various illustrations!  We are also considering a DVD animation collection.

OPEN CIRCUIT : fatcat

This is happening!  FatCat is holding their Open Circuit event at Kunstencentrum Belgie in Belgium on December fourth and some of our work will be screening at it!
Details here!  In addition to the FatCat musicians playing, work by Semiconductor, Danny Peresz, Jeff Dessom, a documentary on Vashti Bunyan and others will also be screening and Shobo Shobo will have an installation of some kind.
Sounds like a good time!

来月の4日に、イギリス・ブライトンのレコードレーベル、FatCat recordsスペシャルイベント、Open Circuitにていくつかの作品が上映される事になりました!
会場はベルギーのKunstencentrum Belgieです。
ベルギーでは、キッチンモータースのイベントで少し上映された事があるので、今回は2度目の上映になります。


ライブとインスタレーション、上映などがミックスされたイベントで、音楽での出演者はブラックダイス、ヨハン・ヨハンソン、ハウシュカ&ゴーストピアノ(?!)。
そして、インスタレーション&パフォーマンス&フィルムプログラムでは、SHOBOSHOBO(フランス)やセミコンダクター(UK)、ヴァシュティ・バニヤンのドキュメンタリーなどなど…FatCatに縁のあるアーティスト大集合で大変豪華です!
上にあるポスターにも、”OVERTURE ANIMATION”と名前を入れてもらっています♪作品だけでも参加できて嬉しいです。

Nook Notes: Entry 01

This is the first in a series of posts recording the progress on a new animation project we are working on at the moment.
It's been over a month since returning to Western Massachusetts from our Oneiric Caravan tour in Japan and much has happened during that time.  And while there is still much uncertainty and a great number of details twirling in the air, one project has guided our decisions and lead us to surprising and promising territory: a new animation!
This new animation, which we've mentioned in passing before, uses the music of our good friend in Brighton, Rec.tangle, and was born out of an extended camping trip we took last year.
The camp ground we used, in Barton Cove (Gill, MA), is a small, but removed peninsula in the Connecticut River.  Overlooking the water through the trees, seeing a small light from a distant cabin on the far shore gave rise to the story of this new animation where many of these elements play prominent roles.  
And as fortune would have it, just as were searching out a new place to live, we were introduced to a small cozy apartment/studio up on a hill overlooking the Connecticut River, not a mile from Barton Cove!  We are now able to properly research and create the animation while continuing to receive the same inspirational influences we originally received when conceiving the story and its characters!


As we begin to sink ourselves into this new world we are also on the lookout for support to enable us to devote more time over the Winter to the animation and have it ready for the Spring!  So let us know if you are interested in helping us out or know of any parties who can!
In the meantime, look out for more production notes from our cozy nook on the hill! 


夏の日本ツアーを終えてマサチューセッツに戻ってきてから一月半ほど経ちました。すぐですね…。
新しいアパートメントにも引っ越して(夢の”猫足バスタブ”のある家!)作業再開です!


他にもいろいろと面白い事が同時進行中なのですが、その事についてはまた後日。
今回は、現在制作中の映像の事についてです。
以前にも書きましたが、今回の映像ではイギリス・ブライトン在住のRec.tangleの新作アルバム「Heavy Maple」 の中から提供してもらった曲を使用しました。
去年の夏にバートンズコーブという、コネチカット川に飛び出した小さな半島にあるキャンプ場でキャンプした時に、彼の曲を聴きながら閃いた、夕暮れの川辺で起こる物語です。


日本ツアーから帰ってきた時にいくつかの偶然が重なって出会った、今のアパートメント/スタジオは、偶然にもコネチカット川が見渡せる高台にあり、バートンズコーブのキャンプ場にもとても近いのです。
この最高のロケーションで、来年の春リリースを目指してがんばっています。


今日はその中から、メインキャラクターのひとり、グンナルの初公開スケッチです!
This is Gunnar.  He is a clever fellow who works hard and bundles up properly when the weather turns cold... but what else?  What are his goals and dreams and is he mischievous or kind of bashful?  
And what's in his bag?


Gunnar is one of two main characters in our new animation and this is yet just a rough sketch of the guy.
Next time we will take a look at Oyami and wonder what she is about.

彼は利発で働き者で、ツンツン頭でマフラーを首に巻いて、袖を折り返したジャケットを着ています。鞄には何が入ってるのか…それは今後のお楽しみです。


そしてこのアニメーションには、もう一人のメインキャラクターがいます。
次回のNook Notesでもうひとりの主役、オヤミちゃん(女の子です!…たぶん)を紹介しようと思います。お楽しみに!



Showreel 2010!



We had a request for a showreel and seeing as we probably won't be finishing any new animations until 2011, we threw this together to see what all of our work looks like jumbled up.

ある所からの上映リクエストがあったので、最新作のBLESSも含めた2010年秋冬バージョンのショウリールを制作しました。
今回は新しい試みで、各アニメーションを混ぜたスタイルにしてみました。音楽はRec.tangleです!

BLESS has been selected for this year's DOTMOV festival!  We are very honored to be picked up again, this time by Ian Anderson of The Designer's Republic, who even wrote a bit about the work:


"When the democratisation of technology means that the means of creative production is lead by technology not creativity it's refreshing to see moving art which moves you, engages the viewer, tells a story. I was hoping for something like this, something that expanded and communicated a concept rather than just being one."


BLESS」が、SHIFT主催のDOTMOVフェスティバル2010の最終作品に選出されました!2008年の選出に続いて2度目です。

そして今回はなんとゲスト審査員の一人、デザイナーズリパブリックのイアン・アンダーソンによりピックアップされ、コメントも頂いてます〜〜!すごい!


"クリエイティブな制作の手段が、クリエティビティではなくテクノロジーによるものであるということをテクノロジーの一般化が意味するとき、感情を揺さぶり、鑑賞者を魅了し、ストーリーを語るような動きのあるアートを見るのはワクワクする。この作品を見て、何かそういうような、ただそれだけとしてあるのではなく、何かコンセプトを広げコミュニケートしていけるようなものを思いました。

今年集まった作品総数は、世界26カ国から237作品。
11月より全11作品で国内外15ヶ所以上(予定)をツアー上映で回ります。

Books & Prints, Bits & Pieces

Some bits and pieces here.
We never mentioned this here, but during the Summer we were in an IdN book, The New Twenties, a collaboration between IdN and Society6, where we have some of our work up.  There are a lot of really amazing folks in the book and we were fortunate enough to be invited to the party.

Also, on the topic of Society6, we recently made some the work we did for our Summer exhibitions in Japan available as prints on the site.  These are ink and watercolor portraits of the Dreamers, the researchers who study the movements and messages of the MoonHare.

This is really only pertinent if you can read Japanese, but the wonderful Japanese site, Public-Image, which focuses on artists, designers and other creators just put up an interview they did with us!
It's the top story and really a very nice interview, performed and written up by the talented and extremely prolific Yuki Harada during our Summer trip to Japan.  They actually wrote a bit about us in 2007 when Rhubarbidoo came out, but this is our first interview for the magazine.
The interview is very detailed concerning Overture's beginnings and goals and we are extremely grateful to have this opportunity!  We hope this helps us find more work in Japan and possible exhibitions as well!

今回の夏の日本ツアーの合間にインタビュアーの原田優輝さんに会ってお話しした、二人の出会いや創作活動の事、これからの事についてです。

Public-imageでは、2007年11月にmumのミュージックビデオをリリースした頃に過去のアニメーション作品と合わせて掲載していただいた事がありました。
あれから3年たったんですね〜。。

さらに、本日(10/25)発売の、世界のクリエイティブジャーナル誌「QUOTATION」最新号にも短いインタビュー記事が掲載されています。

Site Update/サイトアップデート

Our site has undergone some changes!  It's not spectacularly more efficient or snappier, but it is more informative!  There are pages for most of our animations and illustration projects, including those for the MoonHare and Dreamer illustrations we created for the exhibitions we had in Japan this Summer.
In general, the space is now more useful!

秋の感覚/ Autumnal Ruminations


(English & Japanese mixed throughout!)

マサチューセッツに戻ってきて2週間がすぎました。
もう涼しくなったこの場所で過ごしていると、あの暑かった日本での旅の全てがもう何ヶ月も前の事の様に感じます。ついこの前なのに!
空港に着いた日から毎日雨が降り続けてましたが、VimeoフェスティバルのためにNYCに行く日になって急に晴れわたり、最高の秋の天気になりました。
最近はイベントや展示関連の書き込みばかりだったので、本当に久しぶりですがここでの生活で秋を感じるいくつかの光景を紹介しようと思います。

We'll be writing about our trip to the Vimeo Festival in a bit but we wanted to write about our return to the States a little first!  We've been back for over two weeks now and have been really digging deep into the season as we try and figure out what our next move is.  Seems at the moment we're going to be in the Western Mass. area here for a while longer - unless something comes calling us to distant lands.

近所の地元レストラン・デニーズ(大手のファミレスとは別物)にてクラムチャウダーを頂きました。今年の秋はいろんなクラムチャウダーの食べ比べをしてみようと考え中。隣のオイスタークラッカーは、隣のバーモント州で作っているものです。

For starters we've been making the rounds to our favorite local eateries testing out their clam chowders.  We really like clam chowder and there seems to be a wide variety out there.  The two most popular types seems to be a simple, but thick and creamy (classic?) version and a thinner version full of herbs and spices.  Both types have their merits!


ほんの少し晴れてる間を狙って、秋恒例のリンゴ狩りです。
降り続けた雨のため、たくさんのリンゴが地面に落ちてました。枝に残ったリンゴを探してなんとか紙袋二袋分取れました。とった日から毎日リンゴ食べてます♪

And of course it wouldn't be Fall if we didn't head up for some apple picking.  After two and a half months of $2 apples in Japan this is pretty much the best thing that could happen to us.  Plus the place we always go is so great with a beautiful view and lots of big, healthy trees I can climb up (even though we're not supposed to).


こんないい天気でした!そしてまた次の日は雨…



ここではバスケットを借りてそこにリンゴを入れ、何個の紙袋(&どの品種か)によって払う値段が決まります。私達はマッキントッシュという品種で紙袋ひとつ16ドル(だったと思う)でした。



そしてまた別の日、今度はバーモント州の森の中にある山小屋に越したばかりの友達を訪ねていきました。
このカップルと出会ったときから始まった秋の恒例行事、ハロウィーンのためのカボチャ彫りも今年で4年目!今回は白いカボチャと細長いオレンジカボチャを使って1組で1つずつ彫りました。
上の写真は私達のカボチャ、名前はフラン(男の子)です。
生地から手作りのピザもごちそうになり、私達はリンゴ狩りでとったリンゴを使ったケーキを持参して、お腹いっぱいの楽しい時間を過ごしました。



山小屋の外で切り株に腰掛けてカボチャを彫りました。
写真に映ってるのは友達カップルの彫ったオレンジカボチャ、名前はトニー(女の子)だそうです。

And another Autumn tradition (for the past four years!) is carving pumpkins with our friends Ryan and Emily who live up in Vermont.  
This year the carving was held up in the mountains of Westminster at a lovely litte cabin.


まだまだ山ほどあるリンゴ、別の日には夏に裏庭で収穫して冷凍しておいたブルーベリーとざく切りのリンゴをたっぷり入れたパウンドケーキを作りました。
これも美味しかった!旬の食べ物(ブルーベリーは違うけど…)をつかうとなんでも美味しい!

Screening at VFA!



We will be in New York tomorrow and Saturday for the Vimeo Festival and Awards. Our animation, BLESS, nominated for an award with nineteen other videos in the Music Video category but ultimately cut out of the final five, is still screening at the festival.
It will be a part of the "Altered States" screening taking place on Friday at the SVA Theatre.


明日から、Vimeo フェスティバル&アワード(10/8 & 9)に出席のためニューヨークに向かいます。
ニューヨークは約半年ぶり!町を巡りつつ、いくつかのワークショップや上映プログラムに参加したり、人に会ったりしようと思います。

そして、賞は逃しましたが「BLESS」がVimeoフェスティバルのオフィシャルセレクションに入り、会場で上映される事になりましたー!

上映されるプログラムは、8日の2時から3時半にSVAシアタースクールオブビジュアルアーツのシアター)で行われる「Altered States」です。 
会場に行く事ができて(普段は遠くて行けない事が多いので)、さらにあんな大きなお祭りで作品が上映される事が決まり、嬉しい限りです。

日が経つに連れてだんだんとVimeoで6500作品から選ばれてノミネートされた事のすごさがわかってきたような気がします…。会場でたくさんの人、フィルムに出会える事、楽しみにしています。

Vimeo Awards Nomination!

A little late in posting this, but BLESS has been nominated for the Vimeo Awards in the music video category! There are currently 19 other nominated artists in the category but this will be whittled down to 5 today (9/21!), according to the website.
So we're biting our nails a bit, but either way it's a great honor to be nominated alongside so many talented folks!

We've also been invited down to attend the workshops and ceremonies they have going on during the festival (10/8 & 10/9), so regardless of today's results we'll be in the city that weekend!

Twitterアカウントでは流してましたが、ここではまだでした。

アニメーション「BLESS」が、Vimeoの主催する第一回Vimeoアワードのミュージックビデオ部門にノミネートされました!


6500作品の中から、9カテゴリ×20組がノミネート作品として選ばれ(今ここです)、さらに5組のファイナリストが9/21(今日ですー!)にサイト上で発表されるそうです。

他のノミネート作品は、どれも今年いろんな所の映画祭で見たり&すでに選ばれて賞をもらったりしてる方々…でもその中でリストの一番手で頑張ってます。
数時間内に結果が出るとは思うんですが、もう寝なくては…!(発表は米時間に合わせてるのでまだ出ていません/夜12時現在)もしくは寝ないで結果が出るまで頑張るか…。

今回は会場がニューヨークと近いので、開催期間中の10/8 & 9は私達も会場に行くつもりです!ワークショップを受けたり、(結果はどうあれ)セレモニーに顔を出したりするつもりです!楽しみ!!

※5組の最終選考には選ばれませんでした…残念!
でも、アワードとは関係なくVimeoフェスティバル内のプログラムで「BLESS」が上映されるかも…!これがほんとなら、初めて自分たちの映像が映画祭のスクリーンで上映される所を見る事になります!(今までは遠すぎていつも見に行けなかったので)
