DOTMOV 2012



from Animation "Halfway"

For the third time we will be in the DOTMOV Festival, run by Sapporo online magazine, SHIFT! The first was in 2008, the second in 2010 and now 2012 with two animations selected, Halfway and Ludic Chase! We are very grateful!
Ludic Chase isn't available online in its entirety yet, but we did put together a trailer and you can watch it below.

There are 13 films in the festival and the screenings will start from November and play not just in Japan but in the US, UK, Sweden and other countries.

札幌のSHIFTが主催するDOTMOVフェスティバル2012、最終選出作品が発表されて、今年はなんと二つの映像が選ばれました。2008年、2010年に続いて３度目です。ありがとうございます。
今年選ばれたのは「Ludic Chase」「Halfway」です！
Ludic Chaseは短いトレイラーをオンラインで見れるようにしました。全編ではないですが、これで雰囲気を掴んでもらえたら…。
選ばれた13作品は11月より国内を巡回し、その後ロンドン・バリ・ストックホルム・ニューヨークなど海外のギャラリーや映画祭・イベントで上映される予定です。お近くの方はぜひに！



Raindance Film Festival／レインダンス映画祭

Ludic Chase was picked to screen at the 20th Raindance Film Festival in London, 9/26 - 10/7!
This of course is a great honor and will also be the European premiere for Ludic Chase!

Ludic Chase will be screened as part of the Shorts Programme 6, titled, Animated Display. The screening will take place at 5:30 PM on 9/29 at the Apollo Cinemas in Picadilly Circus.

Also, our friend Adrien, who made the music on Ludic Chase under the name rec.tangle, lives in the UK with his beautiful family, so having the UK premiere of the animation there is especially wonderful!

And don't forget to check out the Ludic Chase leaf pendants we are selling and some the Ludic Chase history in our series of videos and entries titled, Nook Notes. We will release the animation on the internet in the near future!

9/26〜10/7にイギリス・ロンドンで開催される第20回レインダンス映画祭にて「LUDIC CHASE」が選ばれました!
この映画祭での上映が、UKはもちろんヨーロッパでの初めての上映になります。

上映は９月２９日（金）17:30からのShorts Programme 6「Animated Display」です。会場はロンドン市内のピカデリーサーカスにある映画館Apollo Cinemas/アポロシネマです。

音楽を作ってくれたrec.tangleことアドリアン夫婦の暮らしているイギリスで、ヨーロッパ初めての上映ができることが本当に嬉しいです。

Leaf Pendants!

August 29th was Overture's birthday (and Aya's!) and at eight years old we still have so much yet to share and do! But at the same time we are amazed at what has been accomplished in this time and are so grateful for so many supportive friends and family and fans that have helped us to come so far!

We're fairly busy at the moment, working on a non-animation project and preparing to go to the Sapporo International Short Film Festival next Sunday, but we wanted to do something for Overture's birthday. We still have a few Ludic Chase leaf pendants (actually there are more with the Magi Union in Japan) and thought we would make what we have available for purchase!

The pendants are leaf-shaped and are taken from the leaf that Gunnar waves to attract fireflies and ultimately Oyami in the yet-to-be-publicly-released, Ludic Chase! The animation is doing a few festivals right now and hopefully will be out and about the internet this Fall! Below is the very first still from the animation that demonstrates the calling power of the leaf.

There are only thirteen of these pendants in our possession! I recommend you get one or more for yourself or your loved ones. I should also mention they are all the similar leafy shape but each one is perfectly unique as we crafted and painted them with our own hands. Available on our etsy account!

8月29日はOvertureは８年目の記念日でした。（私Ayaの誕生日でもあります。メッセージありがとう！）まだまだ皆さんにお見せしたいもの／作りたいものは尽きないですが、ここまでやって来れた事、なんとかコンスタントに作品を世に出し続ける事ができた事、本当にありがたいと思います。支えてくれている家族、友人達、そしていつも作品を見てくれているみなさま！感謝感謝ですー！

今、私達はちょっと変わった絵本のプロジェクト、そして来週の日曜に発つ札幌国際短編映画祭への準備で忙しくしていますが、このOvertureの記念の日に何かしたいなと考えました。
少し手元に残っているLudic Chaseの葉っぱのペンダントをEtsyストアで販売するのはどうだろうと思いました。
この葉っぱの形のペンダントはグンナルとオヤミちゃんの出てくる夕暮れ時の蛍の森の物語、Ludic Chaseから生まれました。
私達二人で形を作り、色柄をつけた、ひとつひとつ表情の違う陶器製のペンダントトップです。
ちなみにLudic Chase、いくつかの映画祭での上映を待っていますが、いよいよこの秋頃にオンラインでも見てもらえるようになる予定です！（下の画像は葉っぱの力で蛍を集めるグンナルです）

ペンダントトップ、そんなにたくさんはありません。（日本のMagi Unionでも少し保管してるみたいだけど…）ご自分にひとつ、もし気に入ったらもうひとつ、いかがでしょうか。

Sapporo Short Fest / 札幌国際短編映画祭

Festival and travel news!
We've been nominated for the Filmmaker award at this year's Sapporo International Short Film Festival! It is a huge honor for us!
There are only three other nominees and they are all accomplished, amazing filmmakers: Mohammad reza Hajipour, Don Hetzfeldt and Johannes Nyholm.
We will be screening five of our animations at the festival: Rhubarbidoo, Bryum & Kapok, BLESS, Halfway and Ludic Chase.
We will have more on the schedule dates and time, but the festival is from September 9th through 17th and best yet: we will be in attendance!

札幌で９月に開催される、ショートフィルム映画祭＆マーケット「第７回 札幌国際短編映画祭」のフィルムメーカー部門にノミネートされ、札幌での作品上映が決まりました!

これから全体の情報が公開されていくと思います。

このフィルムメーカー部門は世界の映画祭の中でも珍しいエントリー方式で、3本以上＆45分以内で自分の作品をプログラムにしてエントリーするというもので、映画祭の目玉プログラムのひとつだそうです。
入選作家わずか４組（ムハンマド・レザ・ハジポ、ドン・ハーツフェルト、ヨハネス・ニホムそしてOverture）のなかのひと組に選ばれて光栄です。

ひとつの作品ではなく、今までの作品の流れ＆活動に興味を持ってもらえてフィルムメーカー部門に選んでいただいた事、とてもうれしいです！
上映プログラムでは、今までの作品の中からRhubarbidoo、Bryum & Kapok、BLESS、Halfway、Ludic Chaseの５本が上映される予定です。

そして私たちも札幌の映画祭期間中に札幌を訪れるつもりです！
ふたりとも初札幌なのでほんとうに楽しみにしています。

Upcoming Animation

We've got a new animation coming...!
(in addition to Ludic Chase)
It is a bit of a change of pace for us, a fresh musical styling, a touch of live action even!
We are quite excited.
The animation is a music video for Self Jupiter and Kenny Segal's new team-up, The Kleenrz. Their album is coming out July 31st on Hellfyre Club and our video will be out soon after.
They've already released another animated video by James Reitano, who's made videos for Kool Keith, Madvillian and Cut Chemist. He also did the artwork for the album.
We'll be around with more details soon!

新しいアニメーションがもうすぐリリースされます！
（Ludic Chaseの前に、です。これも公開近づいています！）
今回の映像はOvertureにとってとても新鮮なスタイルで、音楽のタイプ、実写部分の盛り込みなど、ほんの少しずつだけど今までにない試みだらけです。私たちもリリースをとても楽しみにしていました。
このアニメーションは、7/31にアルバムをHellfyre Club Recordsより発売するLA拠点のSelf JupiterとKenny Segalが作った新しいヒップホップのユニット、The Kleenrzのミュージックビデオになります。
私たちのビデオはアルバムリリースの数日後に発表される予定です。
同アルバムから、Kool KeithやMadvillian、Cut Chemistのビデオを制作した映像ディレクターJames Reitanoによるアニメーションビデオがすでに公開されています。彼はアルバムのアートワークも担当しています。

由布院でのMAGI NIGH Lodge と、 日田でのProjecting Together が終了して、これで九州での催しは終わりました。
5月になって東京ではたくさんのイベントがあるので、ここでひとつ何があるのかを書き出してみようと思います。

まず5/3（木）。
dublab.jp主催のFruiting Bodies！DJ&スクリーニングのイベントです。映像はJordan KimとOverture。Jordanの映像が投稿でスクリーニングされるのはこれが初だと思います。DJ陣もdublabにゆかりのあるすごいメンバー＆Magi Unionからマイケルが参加します！

MAGU NIGHの音楽イベントRitual Exchange！六本木Super Deluxeで、音楽と、ライブドローイングと、即興演奏と、スクリーニングが同じ場所で観れる聴けるという夜！
出演する方も本当に素敵＆豪華です。いろんな場面で初めての事が多いこのイベント、何がおこるかとても楽しみにしています。

MAGI NIGH Tumblr！

We've mentioned it briefly, but the MAGI NIGH tumblr is now officially up and running!  Managed by the Magi Union (essentially us and an amazing couple who we will introduce in another post!), it is the place to go for all things MAGI NIGH.
Most of the site is only in Japanese at the moment, but there is a growing, lovely collection of images to browse, and all the basic event info (date, location) should be easily understandable.  I am trying to catch up and make all the posts available in English as well!  So keep checking back!

Rayons "Halfway" Trailer


As the debut album for Rayons, After the Noise is Gone, comes out on Wednesday (1/18), and the animated video for one of the tracks is a little ways off, we were asked to put together a brief trailer to advertise the release and tease the upcoming full animation.

CDジャケットデザインを担当しました音楽家Rayons（レイヨン）さんの1stアルバム「After the noise is gone」が1/18に発売になることにあわせて短いトレイラー映像が公開されています。





The animation will be using the track, Halfway, from the album, featuring the vocals of Predawn.  As with the work we did with Kira Kira's last album, Our Map to the Monster Olympics, where the album artwork and later animated video were tightly linked, so too with Rayons' album and video.
We will be sharing more images from the album in the next few days and when the animation is finally released, the connections will be very clear.  We are very excited for both pieces of the project to come out, and very grateful to be a part of this with the wonderful music of Rayons!

Imagery from the album artwork has also been nicely used for Rayons' current website.  The menu icons are especially great.

CDの中身と映像がリンクする造りはKiraKiraの Our Map to the Monster Olympics以来ですね。
ビデオのみを見た事ある人がCDを発見してまた楽しめるし、CDを持ってる人はいつの日かビデオを見つけて、お〜あの絵が動いてる！…という風に楽しんでもらえたらいいなと思っています。

Rayonsさんの特設HPもあって、私達が作ったのではないですが世界観を統一してくれていて素敵なのでぜひ見てみてくださいね。

Istanbul Animation Festival!

This is happening right now and for some reason we didn't even know it!
But!  If you are around Istanbul this weekend check out the Instanbul Animation Festival taking place at the Pera Museum from the 16th to the 19th.
Bryum & Kapok was selected for this festival and is screening on the 19th at 1:30 PM.

We are very grateful to be a part of the festival, especially now when various threads of our life are connected to this ancient city.




トルコのイスタンブールで開催される、イスタンブールアニメーションフェスティバル（リンク先は英語です）のコンペティション部門で「Bryum & Kapok」3部作が選ばれました！

IAF6. | Istanbul Animation Festival

フェスティバル開催期間は12/16 から19まで。（もうスタートしています）
イスタンブールのペラ美術館内のシアターで、選ばれた作品が上映される予定です。
B&Kが上映されるのは最終日の１９日、コンペティションフィルムズ・12というプログラムです。
これを知ったのはついさっき、それも偶然このフェスティバルの上映スケジュールのページにいって知りました…（笑）発表は１１月にはもうされてたみたいなんですが…見落としたんですね、きっと。
お近くの方はぜひ！私達も、ひとり友達がイスタンブールにいるのでこのニュースを教えるのが楽しみです。ペラ美術館は下の写真のような所です。素敵な会場！
最近なんだか周辺がトルコづいてるような気が…呼ばれてるのかもしれません。トルコ、喜んで。

DOTMOV 2010 Select!

BLESS has been selected for this year's DOTMOV festival!  We are very honored to be picked up again, this time by Ian Anderson of The Designer's Republic, who even wrote a bit about the work:


"When the democratisation of technology means that the means of creative production is lead by technology not creativity it's refreshing to see moving art which moves you, engages the viewer, tells a story. I was hoping for something like this, something that expanded and communicated a concept rather than just being one."

"クリエイティブな制作の手段が、クリエティビティではなくテクノロジーによるものであるということをテクノロジーの一般化が意味するとき、感情を揺さぶり、鑑賞者を魅了し、ストーリーを語るような動きのあるアートを見るのはワクワクする。この作品を見て、何かそういうような、ただそれだけとしてあるのではなく、何かコンセプトを広げコミュニケートしていけるようなものを思いました。

今年集まった作品総数は、世界26カ国から237作品。
11月より全11作品で国内外15ヶ所以上（予定）をツアー上映で回ります。

This is really only pertinent if you can read Japanese, but the wonderful Japanese site, Public-Image, which focuses on artists, designers and other creators just put up an interview they did with us!
It's the top story and really a very nice interview, performed and written up by the talented and extremely prolific Yuki Harada during our Summer trip to Japan.  They actually wrote a bit about us in 2007 when Rhubarbidoo came out, but this is our first interview for the magazine.
The interview is very detailed concerning Overture's beginnings and goals and we are extremely grateful to have this opportunity!  We hope this helps us find more work in Japan and possible exhibitions as well!

今回の夏の日本ツアーの合間にインタビュアーの原田優輝さんに会ってお話しした、二人の出会いや創作活動の事、これからの事についてです。
Public-imageでは、2007年11月にmumのミュージックビデオをリリースした頃に過去のアニメーション作品と合わせて掲載していただいた事がありました。
あれから３年たったんですね〜。。
さらに、本日（10/25）発売の、世界のクリエイティブジャーナル誌「QUOTATION」最新号にも短いインタビュー記事が掲載されています。

Our site has undergone some changes!  It's not spectacularly more efficient or snappier, but it is more informative!  There are pages for most of our animations and illustration projects, including those for the MoonHare and Dreamer illustrations we created for the exhibitions we had in Japan this Summer.
In general, the space is now more useful!

Vimeo Awards Nomination!

A little late in posting this, but BLESS has been nominated for the Vimeo Awards in the music video category! There are currently 19 other nominated artists in the category but this will be whittled down to 5 today (9/21!), according to the website.
So we're biting our nails a bit, but either way it's a great honor to be nominated alongside so many talented folks!

We've also been invited down to attend the workshops and ceremonies they have going on during the festival (10/8 & 10/9), so regardless of today's results we'll be in the city that weekend!

Twitterアカウントでは流してましたが、ここではまだでした。

アニメーション「BLESS」が、Vimeoの主催する第一回Vimeoアワードのミュージックビデオ部門にノミネートされました！


6500作品の中から、９カテゴリ×２０組がノミネート作品として選ばれ（今ここです）、さらに５組のファイナリストが9/21（今日ですー！）にサイト上で発表されるそうです。

他のノミネート作品は、どれも今年いろんな所の映画祭で見たり＆すでに選ばれて賞をもらったりしてる方々…でもその中でリストの一番手で頑張ってます。
数時間内に結果が出るとは思うんですが、もう寝なくては…！（発表は米時間に合わせてるのでまだ出ていません／夜１２時現在）もしくは寝ないで結果が出るまで頑張るか…。

今回は会場がニューヨークと近いので、開催期間中の10/8 ＆ 9は私達も会場に行くつもりです！ワークショップを受けたり、（結果はどうあれ）セレモニーに顔を出したりするつもりです！楽しみ！！

※５組の最終選考には選ばれませんでした…残念！
でも、アワードとは関係なくVimeoフェスティバル内のプログラムで「BLESS」が上映されるかも…！これがほんとなら、初めて自分たちの映像が映画祭のスクリーンで上映される所を見る事になります！（今までは遠すぎていつも見に行けなかったので）

A new animation! A very very very brief animation (30 seconds) for video site Vimeo's upcoming film festival.
We drew it just before leaving for Japan and put it together after arriving. It was a great deal of fun!

The music is by our good friend Magical Power Mako and though the clip is short we are still very happy to finally have an opportunity to work with him! Certainly we will be working together again in the future!

First:
Our MoonHare exhibition at Gallery Blue Ballen wrapped up last Friday and we wanted to thank Ura-san, Tomoko-san, Hirakawa-san and everyone who came out to Yufuin to see the show! It was a wonderful success and will surely prove to be a seed for future projects in Oita-ken.

Second:
Another festival announcement! This time it's the KLIK! festival in Amsterdam, September 15-19th. I thought we had written on this earlier as it was decided a while ago - but they only just recently uploaded the schedule so maybe we had been waiting on that.
We will be screening Bless at the festival in the Commissioned Animation Competition.
We have never screened in Amsterdam and the KLIK! lineup looks really great! Should be a fantastic festival!

◉湯布院ブルーバレンでの個展「MoonHare」が先週の金曜日に終了しました。
ギャラリーの裏さん、トモコさん、平川さん、そして展示と25日にイベントに来てくださった全ての皆様、どうもありがとうございました！
また大分県で展示やイベントができる事、楽しみにしています。

9/15〜9/19の間、オランダ・アムステルダムで開催されるKLIK!映画祭です。
以前少しだけこの映画祭の事について書いたような気もしますが、スケジュールが新しくアップされていたので改めてお知らせします。
上映されるのはBLESSで、 コミッションアニメーションコンペティションという部門で選ばれました。
アムステルダム、そしてオランダでの作品上映は初めてです。

FANTOCHE

Switzerland! Just a quick note that BLESS is screening in the Swiss animation festival, FANTOCHE this September! It will screen in the Animated Music Clips section along with a selection of incredible and intimidating videos. We are very excited!

9月7日から9月12日の６日間、スイス・バーデンで開催される、ファントーシュ国際アニメーション映画祭で、私達のビデオ”BLESS”が上映される事が決まりました！
上映されるのは、アニメーションミュージックビデオ部門です。
国際的な映画祭で、2010年のアニメーションミュージックビデオのセレクションの一本に自分たちの作品が選ばれる事、とても嬉しいです。

Oneiric Caravan

Did we mention this previously? After our exhibition at Gallery Blue Ballen we are touring Japan! And with the wonderful musicians of Sheeprint!
We are calling it "Oneiric Caravan", mixing our Storytellers performance of storytelling and animation with the live music of Sheeprint and other guests to create an engaging and dreamy experience.

今回縁あって出会った素敵なバンド、Sheeprintと共に上映×音楽パフォーマンスの”Oneiric Caravan”ツアーを行います！

8/13（金）の日田を皮切りに、全国９カ所（追加あるかも？）を巡る予定です。

NYで発表したStorytellersの日本バージョンの上演、そしてそれぞれの場所で豪華な共演者の方々が出てくださいます。

Clubhouse!


Yo Gabba Gabba! just released a new DVD, "Clubhouse", collecting four episodes from across their three seasons. One of these episodes is the "Animals" episode which includes the animation "Animal Sounds" we created!
Pretty exciting!
The DVD is available for purchase right now on Amazon for $16.99 ($12.99?) as well as at other retailers both online and physical.

つい先日リリースされたばかりのYo Gabba Gabba!の新しいDVD "Clubhouse"。今までの３シーズンの放送の全エピソードの中から選ばれた、４つのエピソードが収録されています。
その中の１つに、なんと私達の制作したアニメーション"Animal Sounds"が入っている "Animals"が仲間入りしています！
DVDに作品が収録されて、子供達にまた見てもらえたらいいなと思います。

只今DVDは Amazonで16.99ドル (12.99ドル?) で手に入るようです。
アメリカを始め、各国の店頭にも並び始めると思います。

MoonHare Exhibition

As we have hinted at and mentioned in passing, we will be in Japan this summer doing some Overture-related things! Some exhibitions, some Storyteller-style events and tying it all together, a new animation we will be creating throughout our travels.
Many of the pieces are still drifting down but the first bits are beginning to settle so we thought it would be a good time to start discussing them!

We will have one exhibition at the Blue Ballen Gallery in Yufuin, on the southern island of Kyushuu from July 23 to August 6. Nearby in the city of Oita we will hold an event on July 25 at the MultiCulti space. In addition to storytelling and screenings we will also be doing a talk at the event and we will hopefully be at the gallery almost every day of the two weeks, working on the animation in the thick heat and talking with anyone who might stop by. (During our off time we will also be relaxing in the various hot springs in Aya's hometown of Beppu!)

The theme surrounds the MoonHare, a great earless hare who carries the power of the moon in his tail. The exhibition will focus on the story of the MoonHare, how the MoonHare gained the power of the moon told through the panels of a picture book we are working on. The portraits of dreaming gods who influence the MoonHare will also be displayed along with related older work.
The Storytellers event will likewise focus on the elusive and mythical hare. In what manner it will relate will be revealed at the event itself.
And in the animation, which we will write more about in the future, a phantom MoonHare plays a crucial role. The animation will use the lovely music of rec.tangle, who we've mentioned in the past.


以前少しこのブログで触れましたが、今年の夏はOVTR日本ツアー’10・夏！ということで日本に行きます！
今回は、訪れた先で展示やStorytellers的なイベント/上映会、そして旅をしながら新しいビデオの製作もやろうと考えています。
ちょうど夏頃にはいろんな事が国内外で起こる予定ですが、今お知らせ出来る事をひとつ。

7月23日から8月6日の２週間、大分県湯布院にあるBlue Ballen Galleryさんで「Moon Hare（ムーンヘア/月兎） Exhibition」を行います。
このギャラリーはつい最近改装を終えたばかりで、私達が展示させてもらう２Fは新しくオープンした現代美術をメインとした展示スペースだそうです。

さらに、大分市内のコミュニケーションスペースMulti Cuiti(マルティカルティ)にて、7月25日（日）の夜８時からmumのビデオなど含む今までの映像作品の上映会＆アーティストトークのイベント(予定内容です)も開催して頂く事になりました。
1000円で１ドリンク付いてくるそうなので、ぜひお近くの方はお越し下さい。
「サイケデリック」「中毒になる」「ドラッグでもやっているとしか思えない」など、数多くの褒め言葉（？）を頂いてきたOvertureの謎映像を立て続けに鑑賞しましょう！（それも作者と一緒に！）よろしくお願いします〜！

展示のタイトル「Moon Hare（ムーンヘア/月兎）」の話に戻りますが、このムーンヘアは耳のない巨大なウサギで、月の力を溜めて大きく膨らんだ丸い尻尾を持っています。
今回の展示では、このムーンヘアが月の力を得た時の話をテーマにした絵本の原画、そしてその出来事を世界各地で感じ取る神様/賢者達の肖像画などを、展示予定です。

展示会場内で新作アニメーションの公開製作も考えています。
なぜなら、この映像の物語がムーンヘアと大いに関係あるからなんです。
詳しい事はまたいずれ…なんですが、ここで小さく、でもすごい発表を…今回のコラボミュージシャンは以前ブログで紹介した事もあるイギリス・ブライトン在住のrec.tangleです!!ドドーン！とても面白いビデオになると思います！お楽しみに！

Graniph Labs


Graniph, the brand we designed a Ding-Dong Yeahs ancestor t-shirt for back in 2007, recently opened a kind of showcase site called Graniph Labs. They introduce different interesting events and things their associated artists have going on.
I'm not exactly sure when the site when up and I haven't figured out all the nuances of how they have things laid out, but they recently put up a number of our animations, including Bless!
Take a stroll around the site and see what other folks are up to!

2007年にDing-Dong YeahsのシャツでコラボしたTシャツブランドGraniphが、Graniph Labsという新しいサイト（英語のみのようです）をオープンしました。
そのサイトでは、今までGraniphと関係のあったアーティストの参加するイベントや最新作品などがたくさん紹介されていて、その中に私たちOvertureの映像作品も数点掲載していただいてます。
