Nook Notes: Entry 04

Here is the second of our Nook Notes video entries, a trip to Barton's Cove, the small peninsula in the Connecticut River just across the water from where we currently live and the original location for the inspiration for the animation we are working on.
It is a quiet bit of woodland and along with recent video of the area we've mixed in some photos from the camping trip that conceived the characters and story of this animation.

The music is another sketch by Rec.tangle.  It is taken from the set the last short song was a part of.

制作中の映像の様子や背景をお伝えするNookNotes、今回はひとつ前のNook Notes Video（http://overture-image.blogspot.com/2010/12/nook-notes-entry-03.html）にも少し出てきていたエリアBarton's Cove(バートンズコーブ)の風景です。
バートンズコーブはコネチカット川に突き出た小さな半島で、私達の家から見える川を挟んで向こう側にあります。
この場所で夏にキャンプをした時に、Rec.tangleの音楽を持って行き、川の流れる様子や次第に暗くなっていく中で向こう岸の明かりを眺めたりしているうちに、現在作っているアニメーションのアイデアが浮かんできたのです。
ビデオでは、バートンズコーブを訪れて撮った最近の映像の中に、夏のそのキャンプで撮った写真も混ぜています。

音楽は今回もRec.tangleのものです。
Overtureの未来の作品のために制作してくれた短い曲の一部を使わせてもらいました。

Nook Notes: Barton's Cove

年末は本当に慌ただしいですが、制作も着々と進んでいます。

とは言え、年の瀬の行事なども入ってくるので年が明けるまではイレギュラーな感じでがんばります。

皆様も空気の乾燥する時期、運動や足湯などで汗かいて体をウイルスから守ってくださいね。

Nook Notes: Entry 03

Here is a short video of us and some birds!
It is also a short video describing our current workspace and the surrounding area.  The river and the dam play a large role where we are now, we see it when we wake up in the morning and hear the deep roar of the falling water when we go to bed.
At the beginning of the video when the title appears the shot is of our spot of inspiration, Barton's Cove, which is very close to us, and even visible from our studio now that the leaves have fallen off the trees.

The music, by the way, is by Rec.tangle.  It is a little sketch he did for us in preparation for a feature-length animation we are slowly planning.

新作ビデオの情報をお伝えするNook Notes。
３回目は私達の現在の作業場の様子や今住んでるあたり（そして鳥、鳥、鳥達）を短い映像で紹介します。

川とダムを見下ろす現在のスタジオ・アパートメントは、朝起きると寝室の窓から眺める事が出来、夜寝るときは大量の川の水がダムに流れ込む心地よい音が遠くに聞こえます。

ちょうどタイトルが出ている所で今回のビデオのアイデアが生まれたBarton's Coveというキャンプ場のある半島が映っています。

音楽はRec.tangle。
現在ひっそりと進行中の長編作品のために、彼が作ってくれた短い印象的な曲達の中から一曲使わせてもらいました。
冬の始まりに撮った映像なので全体的にグレーで少し寒々しく見える所を(もうちょっと早く撮れば良かったですね…）、彼の音楽で暖かさを感じてもらえたらと思います。
では暖かい飲み物などと一緒に、どうぞ。

DOTMOV has added a number of international locations to its traveling festival!  
Check out all the dates and additional info here!
Currently the videos are screening in Stockholm but they'll be in L.A. (NORBERTELLEN GALLERY), Buenos Aires (G104), São Paulo (Arte.mov 2010), New York (Ward Nasse Gallery) and Kuala Lumpur (KLDW2011), while continuing at various locations in Japan.


We'll certainly be going to the New York screening in February!

Nook Notes: Entry 02

It has been a wet week, here above the Great Falls, and though we've felt a little beaten down by the weather the drawing continues!  Many animals come visiting the river when the clouds are as low as they've been and we've seen swans and red-tailed hawks and rabbits among the regular customers of geese, mallards and woodpeckers.

雪になりきれない雨がしとしと降っています。夜はマイナスになるけど昼間は15℃になったりする日もある11月にしては暖かい気候。
ニンジン、パースニップ（白いニンジンみたい）、カボチャに大根…根菜をたっぷり使った食事を取って来たるべき冬に備えます。
さて、前回のNook Notesで紹介したグンナルに引き続き、今回はもう一人の主役、オヤミちゃんの紹介です！

Anyway, this is Oyami!  She is a mystery!  She is connected to the forest where Gunnar lives, but she is also connected to the dark and shadows - but to fireflies as well!
She is also a wild, unknown thing and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Oyami is the other main player in the animation we are working on.  Like last time, this is still just a rough sketch of her.
We will be back again soon with more details on this project!

オヤミちゃんは、グンナルの住んでいる森にいる謎の生き物です。
彼女が森に出てくるのはいつも太陽が落ちてから。暗闇と影が大好きで、蛍とは何か特別のつながりがありそうです。
森で見かけた事はあっても、オヤミちゃんの家がどこにあるのか、昼間はどこで何をしているのか、誰も知りません。
彼女が新作ビデオの主人公の一人として、グンナルとともに出てきます。どうぞよろしく！

Nook Notes: Entry 01

This is the first in a series of posts recording the progress on a new animation project we are working on at the moment.
It's been over a month since returning to Western Massachusetts from our Oneiric Caravan tour in Japan and much has happened during that time.  And while there is still much uncertainty and a great number of details twirling in the air, one project has guided our decisions and lead us to surprising and promising territory: a new animation!
This new animation, which we've mentioned in passing before, uses the music of our good friend in Brighton, Rec.tangle, and was born out of an extended camping trip we took last year.
The camp ground we used, in Barton Cove (Gill, MA), is a small, but removed peninsula in the Connecticut River.  Overlooking the water through the trees, seeing a small light from a distant cabin on the far shore gave rise to the story of this new animation where many of these elements play prominent roles.  
And as fortune would have it, just as were searching out a new place to live, we were introduced to a small cozy apartment/studio up on a hill overlooking the Connecticut River, not a mile from Barton Cove!  We are now able to properly research and create the animation while continuing to receive the same inspirational influences we originally received when conceiving the story and its characters!


As we begin to sink ourselves into this new world we are also on the lookout for support to enable us to devote more time over the Winter to the animation and have it ready for the Spring!  So let us know if you are interested in helping us out or know of any parties who can!

夏の日本ツアーを終えてマサチューセッツに戻ってきてから一月半ほど経ちました。すぐですね…。
新しいアパートメントにも引っ越して（夢の”猫足バスタブ”のある家！）作業再開です！


他にもいろいろと面白い事が同時進行中なのですが、その事についてはまた後日。
今回は、現在制作中の映像の事についてです。
以前にも書きましたが、今回の映像ではイギリス・ブライトン在住のRec.tangleの新作アルバム「Heavy Maple」 の中から提供してもらった曲を使用しました。
去年の夏にバートンズコーブという、コネチカット川に飛び出した小さな半島にあるキャンプ場でキャンプした時に、彼の曲を聴きながら閃いた、夕暮れの川辺で起こる物語です。


日本ツアーから帰ってきた時にいくつかの偶然が重なって出会った、今のアパートメント／スタジオは、偶然にもコネチカット川が見渡せる高台にあり、バートンズコーブのキャンプ場にもとても近いのです。
この最高のロケーションで、来年の春リリースを目指してがんばっています。


今日はその中から、メインキャラクターのひとり、グンナルの初公開スケッチです！

This is Gunnar.  He is a clever fellow who works hard and bundles up properly when the weather turns cold... but what else?  What are his goals and dreams and is he mischievous or kind of bashful?  
And what's in his bag?


Gunnar is one of two main characters in our new animation and this is yet just a rough sketch of the guy.
Next time we will take a look at Oyami and wonder what she is about.


どうでしょう。グンナルっていう名前に合ってますか？


彼は利発で働き者で、ツンツン頭でマフラーを首に巻いて、袖を折り返したジャケットを着ています。鞄には何が入ってるのか…それは今後のお楽しみです。


そしてこのアニメーションには、もう一人のメインキャラクターがいます。
次回のNook Notesでもうひとりの主役、オヤミちゃん（女の子です！…たぶん）を紹介しようと思います。お楽しみに！

Showreel 2010!

We had a request for a showreel and seeing as we probably won't be finishing any new animations until 2011, we threw this together to see what all of our work looks like jumbled up.

ある所からの上映リクエストがあったので、最新作のBLESSも含めた2010年秋冬バージョンのショウリールを制作しました。
今回は新しい試みで、各アニメーションを混ぜたスタイルにしてみました。音楽はRec.tangleです！

BLESS has been selected for this year's DOTMOV festival!  We are very honored to be picked up again, this time by Ian Anderson of The Designer's Republic, who even wrote a bit about the work:


"When the democratisation of technology means that the means of creative production is lead by technology not creativity it's refreshing to see moving art which moves you, engages the viewer, tells a story. I was hoping for something like this, something that expanded and communicated a concept rather than just being one."


「BLESS」が、SHIFT主催のDOTMOVフェスティバル2010の最終作品に選出されました！2008年の選出に続いて２度目です。

そして今回はなんとゲスト審査員の一人、デザイナーズリパブリックのイアン・アンダーソンによりピックアップされ、コメントも頂いてます〜〜！すごい！


"クリエイティブな制作の手段が、クリエティビティではなくテクノロジーによるものであるということをテクノロジーの一般化が意味するとき、感情を揺さぶり、鑑賞者を魅了し、ストーリーを語るような動きのあるアートを見るのはワクワクする。この作品を見て、何かそういうような、ただそれだけとしてあるのではなく、何かコンセプトを広げコミュニケートしていけるようなものを思いました。

今年集まった作品総数は、世界26カ国から237作品。
11月より全11作品で国内外15ヶ所以上（予定）をツアー上映で回ります。
（Oneiric Caravanツアーで訪れた京都のカフェアンデパンダンも入ってます！）

Screening at VFA!

We will be in New York tomorrow and Saturday for the Vimeo Festival and Awards. Our animation, BLESS, nominated for an award with nineteen other videos in the Music Video category but ultimately cut out of the final five, is still screening at the festival.

It will be a part of the "Altered States" screening taking place on Friday at the SVA Theatre.

明日から、Vimeo フェスティバル＆アワード（10/8 & 9）に出席のためニューヨークに向かいます。

ニューヨークは約半年ぶり！町を巡りつつ、いくつかのワークショップや上映プログラムに参加したり、人に会ったりしようと思います。

そして、賞は逃しましたが「BLESS」がVimeoフェスティバルのオフィシャルセレクションに入り、会場で上映される事になりましたー！

上映されるプログラムは、８日の２時から３時半にSVAシアター（スクールオブビジュアルアーツのシアター）で行われる「Altered States」です。　

会場に行く事ができて（普段は遠くて行けない事が多いので）、さらにあんな大きなお祭りで作品が上映される事が決まり、嬉しい限りです。

日が経つに連れてだんだんとVimeoで6500作品から選ばれてノミネートされた事のすごさがわかってきたような気がします…。会場でたくさんの人、フィルムに出会える事、楽しみにしています。

A new animation! A very very very brief animation (30 seconds) for video site Vimeo's upcoming film festival.

We drew it just before leaving for Japan and put it together after arriving. It was a great deal of fun!

The music is by our good friend Magical Power Mako and though the clip is short we are still very happy to finally have an opportunity to work with him! Certainly we will be working together again in the future!

このビデオは秋に開催されるVimeoフィルムフェスティバル＆アワードのCM的なもので、頼まれてからかなり待ってもらったのですが、昨日完成し、名古屋に旅立とうとする朝、やっと公開する事ができましたー！

FANTOCHE

Switzerland! Just a quick note that BLESS is screening in the Swiss animation festival, FANTOCHE this September! It will screen in the Animated Music Clips section along with a selection of incredible and intimidating videos. We are very excited!

9月7日から9月12日の６日間、スイス・バーデンで開催される、ファントーシュ国際アニメーション映画祭で、私達のビデオ”BLESS”が上映される事が決まりました！

上映されるのは、アニメーションミュージックビデオ部門です。

国際的な映画祭で、2010年のアニメーションミュージックビデオのセレクションの一本に自分たちの作品が選ばれる事、とても嬉しいです。

Clubhouse!

Yo Gabba Gabba! just released a new DVD, "Clubhouse", collecting four episodes from across their three seasons. One of these episodes is the "Animals" episode which includes the animation "Animal Sounds" we created!
Pretty exciting!
The DVD is available for purchase right now on Amazon for $16.99 ($12.99?) as well as at other retailers both online and physical.

つい先日リリースされたばかりのYo Gabba Gabba!の新しいDVD "Clubhouse"。今までの３シーズンの放送の全エピソードの中から選ばれた、４つのエピソードが収録されています。

その中の１つに、なんと私達の制作したアニメーション"Animal Sounds"が入っている "Animals"が仲間入りしています！

DVDに作品が収録されて、子供達にまた見てもらえたらいいなと思います。

只今DVDは Amazonで16.99ドル (12.99ドル?) で手に入るようです。

アメリカを始め、各国の店頭にも並び始めると思います。

50th Krakow Film Festival

Last night (Sat. June 5th) Bless screened at the Krakow Film Festival in Poland, one of the oldest film festivals in Europe!
We were sworn to secrecy to preserve the surprise of the lineup, but it was a great lineup and we are extremely honored to be invited to screen at a festival of such history.
The lineup can be seen here while below is a nice trailer of some of the videos including a brief cameo by a friend of ours - see if you can spot him!

昨日（土曜日）の夜、ヨーロッパで一番古い歴史を持つ映画祭のうちの１つ、ポーランドのKrakow Film Festival内のプログラム／ミュージックビデオナイトにて「BLESS」が上映されました。

上映される事は知っていたんですが、来てくれるお客さんを驚かせるために上映が終わるまでは内緒に、という事で終わってからの報告になります。（嬉しい事に、ミュージックビデオナイトのバナーにBLESSのキャラクター、２次元おじさんが選ばれてたので、100％秘密ではなかったようでしたが…でも一応我慢しときました）

Pictoplasma: Psychedelic Midnight Mix

This will be our second year in the Psychedelic Midnight Mix of Pictoplasma's annual festival.

Last year Bryum & Kapok was selected and screened in the same section and this year Bless was accepted!

The Pictoplasma festival, which is in Berlin, is on April 9th and 10th and is jam packed with all sorts of great stuff. So if you're going to be in Berlin around that time - and specifically on April 9th around 11 PM you can gocheck out Bless on a big screen along with a huge selection of other great animations!

ここ数日ニュース続きですね〜 なんだか春らしい気分です。

昨年も参加した、ベルリンで開催されるPictoplasma主催のキャラクターデザインを中心としたフェスティバル／カンファレンスイベントPictopiaにて新作ビデオ「Bless 」が上映される事が決定しました！

出る枠も、去年のBryum & Kapok同様、深夜から始まる"Psychedelic Midnight Mix (サイケデリックミッドナイトミックス)"です！またしても！

２年連続上映、それもまた深夜帯…いいですね〜。これを見て寝てしまう人がいるんじゃないんでしょうか。

4月9〜10日の２日間、たくさんのイベント、スピーチ、上映、パーティなど目白押しです。お近くの方はぜひお越し下さい。私たちの上映は9日の夜11時スタートです。

BLESS

An old man confronts his fears, traveling across a personal landscape to realize and accept his path.

Our animation, Bless, for our dear friend, KiraKira premieres today on Pitchfork.tv!!!

The song is Bless from KiraKira's 2008 album, Our Map to the Monster Olympics and it is still available through Smekkleyesa and After Hours (actually, currently sold out, but getting a repress this summer)!

Expect to see it on larger screens at festivals throughout the year as well as part of our Storytellers event, which we hope to be doing again in the near future!

ついに出ました！

Overtureの最新作であるKiraKiraのミュージックビデオ/PV「BLESS」が、アメリカの音楽サイトPitchfork.tvにてプレミア公開されました。

「BLESS」は、2008年に出たKiraKiraのアルバム「Our Map to the Monster Olympics」(Smekkleyesa／After Hours)に収録されている曲です。

ある夜、おじいさんがベッドの中で出会うもう一人の自分、そして内面世界を旅する話です。

今回このアニメーションの元になった絵はこちらです。

アルバム「Our Map to the Monster Olympics」に同封されているマップの「BLESS」の部分の即興のイラストレーションです。見比べながらこのビデオを見ても面白いかもしれません。

Bless is Coming

A new animation will welcome 2010. An animation deeply connected with our good friend KiraKira, using the song Bless from her 2008 album, Our Map to the Monster Olympics.
With every cd copy of the album came a large, foldout map for the Monster Olympics. The map was broken into sections and each section corresponded to a song on the album.
The section for Bless is there on the left. Aside from some loose and independent interpretations of the lyrics for the song, the image was created through improvisation, letting our collective imagination describe the scene.

The animation will touch on a number of themes that have occupied our live these past few months and years, while bringing to visual life the flavor of Kira Kira's sweet and haunting music.

You will see!

現在製作中で2010年にリリースされる予定の、新作アニメーションのお知らせです。

今回のビデオはKiraKiraのコラボ！彼女が2008年にリリースしたアルバム「Our Map to the Monster Olympics」（アートワーク：Overture）の収録曲「Bless」を使用しています。

このアルバム、「Our Map to the Monster Olympics」のパッケージの中には、タイトルの”モンスターオリンピック”会場で配布されるマップが入っていました。

マップはいくつかのパーツに分かれて、そのひとつひとつがアルバムの収録曲を表し即興で描かれています。

この制作はとても楽しかったです。楽曲の世界についたり離れたりダンスしながら、描いてた時の個人的な事、KiraKiraとのやり取りで浮かんできたものなどいろんな要素が絡み合って時間がかかりましたが、またいつか掘り進めてみたい所です。

「Bless」のアートワークは上の画像の白い部分です。この世界が動きます〜！

また完成が近づいたらお知らせしますので、それまでは上の絵で（マップを持ってる人は眺めながら／曲を聴きながら）想像してください。

Imaginaria Film Festival

And yet another screening!
Bryum & Kapok, in its entirety, was selected to screen in the 7th edition of the Imaginaria Film Festival in Conversano, Italy! The festival runs from the 11th to 15th of November and Bryum & Kapok will screen on the 12th from around 6 PM. A schedule can be found here (in Italian).

今年の秋はお知らせする事が多いですね。

もうひとつ、上映が決まりました。今度はイタリア！B＆K３部作、イタリアデヴューです。

11/11〜15にイタリアのConversanoで開催される第７回Imaginaria Film FestivalにてBryum & Kapokが選ばれ、３部作まとめて上映される事が決まりました。

上映は12日夕方６時。詳しいスケジュールなどはこちらで確認できます。（イタリア語）

ICA Screening

Another screening!

Byum & Kapok: A Lilt will be screening at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London on November 6th! It will screen as part of Little Pencil, a workshop where children draw to music.
This is an amazing opportunity and the first time our animation will be used in some kind of children education.
If you have kids and are in London, please take a look!

また新たな場所で上映が決まりました。今度はロンドン、それもICAで！

Bryum & Kapokの３作目、「A Lilt」がロンドンのInstitute of Contemporary Artsで11/6に開催されるLittle Pencilという子供のための音楽とドローイングのワークショップにて上映されます。

ここは、もう１０年以上も前に私（Aya）がロンドンでギャラリー巡りをした時に訪ねた事がある思い出の場所です。こうして巡り巡って自分の作品が上映されるチャンスが来た事、とても嬉しいです。

★アニメーションカテゴリでノミネートされていた、The Swatch Young Illustrators Award　2009。先日結果が出て、残念ながら賞は逃しましたが、ノミネート作品の展示は11/1まで続いています。お近くの方はぜひ立ち寄ってみてくださいね。

Let's rendezvous at the Rendezvous!

We are going to be screening Bryum & Kapok in full at this month's Montague Phantom Brain Exchange at the Rendezvous in Turners Falls!

隣町Turners FallsのRendezvousで開催されるイベントで、『Bryum&Kapok』を上映する機会に恵まれました。
毎月、ライブと映像上映とレクチャーが混ぜ混ぜで行われるカオス状態で人気のイベント、Montague Phantom Brain Exchange （モンタギュー ファントム ブレイン エクスチェンジ）。
毎週最後の水曜日に開催されるんですが、次回の6/24に『Bryum&Kapok』3部作で参加します。

















We are being introduced as "Overture Brown" which is sort of funny, but appropriate I guess.
The event is on Wednesday June 24th and starts at 9 pm.
For more details there is a Google Groups page but this is what is written about us:

"Overture Brown's sumptuous psychedelic forrest creatures will dance
upon our screen in a batik-y swirl of magnificently rendered pixels.
The wildly colorful Overture B universe comes from the heads/hands of

上のイベント告知の画像、なぜか"Overture Brown"という名前で紹介されていますが、これはこれでありだなと思ったのでそのままにしています。
英語になりますが、彼らの Google Groups pageにてイベントの詳細、そして出演者の紹介文など書かれています。
このごろは、自分の住んでる場所の近くで作品発表する事がなかったので、生の感想を聞ける事をとても楽しみにしています！

Today's Vimeo Staff Picks!

Another week passing we were finally able to upload an HD version of the third part of Bryum & Kapok, A Lilt onto Vimeo. Not long after uploading this morning the site's staff picked it up for their weekly/daily (?) selection. Not the biggest news ever, but it certainly blew away the viewing numbers of our other uploads. Hopefully there will be some spill over so folks get the full experience of all three.

VimeoにB&K3部作の最後の作品Bryum & Kapok/ A Lilt をアップしました。
このビデオをVimeoのサイトスタッフが見てくれたようで朝にアップしてから間もなく、今週か今日（？）のおすすめにピックアップしてもらいました。
そこからあっという間にたくさんの人が見に来て、コメントも残してくれたりお気に入りにいれてくれたりして、威力のすごさを感じています。
これで、3つ目だけじゃなくて、他の２つも見てくれたらいいなあ…と思いながらも、コメントを読んで励みにしています。

AtmosphereーGas as interface

GAS as Interface just wrote a bit about our work on their blog, Atmosphere. Mostly focusing on Bryum & Kapok they also included Rhubarbidoo.
Publishing the Gasbooks and running Calm & Punk Gallery among other things like representing artists and producing various projects, these are some very fine folks we hope to be talking about again in the future!
